Child-friendly hiking

Explore the various family-friendly hiking and themed trails in the Chäserrugg region and enjoy your trip to Toggenburg. For hikes from Alp Sellamatt you can take the gondola and chair lift from Alt St. Johann. The gondolas can also carry single prams and wheelchairs.

The Varied Trail

After the ride on the train, in a gondola or on one of the chairs (Alt St. Johann - Alp Sellamatt), the hike starts in the direction of Iltios. On this flat and easy path you will pass some of the instruments of the sound path and the forested route is perfect for hot days. Shortly before the stage destination, the Iltios mountain restaurant, the forest opens up and a wonderful view of the Alpstein is revealed.
The restaurant also has a sun terrace with a view of the Churfirsten peaks and a children's playground.
The funicular then takes you back down into the valley to Unterwasser, from where a pleasant path along the Thur leads back to Alt St. Johann. Another option is the post bus (not included in the Churfirsten ticket), which runs from Unterwasser back to Alt St. Johann (village).

The hike is suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

The Family Hike

The first metres in altitude are comfortably conquered with the gondola chairlift and during the ascent you can enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains.
At the Sellamatt mountain station, the path leads directly away to the right and the hike can begin. The route now takes you over the Lämboden past the Mittelstofel Alp and up to the Lochhütte. On this stretch you will also pass signs of the Sagenweg several times. You then leave the Sagenweg and hike over the Schribersboden to Langlitten. Now the Churfirsten peaks seem close enough to touch and impress hikers young and old with their striking form. This passage over the Hinterlücheren can be muddy after rainfall, but with the right footwear it is perfect for balancing from dry spot to dry spot.
After this little challenge, a forest road leads to Zinggen. Here you can either extend the hike by about 30 minutes and hike to Iltios (Churfirsten ticket) or return to the Sellamatt mountain station.

Following the footsteps of the Wildmannli

Explore the 150 m long and legendary cave on the northern slope of the Selun – the Wildmannlisloch.
After starting at Alp Sellamatt, follow the beautiful hiking trail in a westerly direction, past cows and fir forests until you reach the Thurtalerstofel. From here you have a wonderful view through the Toggenburg valley up to the Speer. The path then takes you closer and closer to the Churfirsten to the Selun, where the karst cave is located. The cave is a welcome place to cool off, especially on hot days.

Bears used to hibernate here years ago. In the 1820s, a young man who had probably lived in the cave for some time was found by a shepherd on the Seluner Alp. Although he was given the name Johannes Seluner in the village, he was still known as the "Wildmannli" to many. On this hike which is named after him, young and old follow in the footsteps of this legendary foundling. At the entrance to the cave a plaque tells you more about him, the cave and the local legends before you make your way back via the Schribersboden to Zinggen and Alp Sellamatt. Throughout the hike you will have a wonderful view of Alp Sellamatt and the surrounding mountains.
